Pedals & Presence: A Soulful Bikepacking Journey Exploring the world on two wheels — guided by intuition, nature, and the quiet strength within. Day 4: Trusting Intuition and the Rhythm of the Ride
Location: Tannenbaum Campsite – Belper – Cromford Canal loop- Tannenbaum Campsite
Distance: 30km
Weather: Misty sunrise, calm and clear, sunshine and clouds, Dry.
The Morning After
My first night in the tent — and let’s just say it was… an experience. I didn’t sleep much. Not because I was cold or uncomfortable (thankfully, my sleeping bag, mat, and pillow did their job), but because the silence was so complete all I could hear was my own breath. It was eerie and beautiful all at once. I also had to nip out for a wee — twice.
By 6:15am, I was up and greeted by a sunrise that quite literally stopped me in my tracks. The valley below was cloaked in mist, and the light rising through it felt like something sacred. I brewed a hot cup of tea — shout out to the Alpkit Brukit, which worked like a dream — and sat quietly in gratitude.
Following the Nudge
My plan had been to pack up and move on. But something in me said, Stay. So, I did. I listened to my intuition and booked another night at Tannenbaum Campsite. It was the best decision I could’ve made.
I set off from the campsite, legs already tired, and cycled into Belper and toward the High Peak Trail. The ride was stunning, but I knew deep down that I wouldn’t have managed it with all my kit on the bike today. I had to push the bike a few times. And that’s okay — it’s all part of the experience.
The Ride & Rewards
Found a new power bank (hallelujah), then stopped at Black Rocks for what might just be the best bacon sandwich I’ve ever had. From there, I picked up the trail again at High Peak Junction and cruised along the Cromford Canal. The trail was gorgeous, but the gravel demanded attention — it’s not as easy as it looks. You really must know your bike, trust your brakes, and let your legs do most of the work.
And yet, the freedom… the fresh air… the connection with nature… it made every bit of effort worth it.
Lessons Learned
Always listen to your intuition — it knows
The weather really does change everything
Gravel riding isn’t as simple as it seems — skill and patience required
Cycling brings freedom like nothing else
Winding Down
Spent a chilled afternoon in my tent, soaking in the stillness, writing, resting. Now I’m off to make a simple dinner and watch the pink full moon rise. Fingers crossed for a better sleep tonight.
Rest well, everyone
